DEI vs Meritocracy
Time to get a bit political. While we normally aren't concerned with politics, recent events demand a response.
The current Government is trying to get rid of all DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policy and replace it with a so called "Meritocracy".
If we ignore the fact that leaving out equity is inhumane behavior, I have a real problem with their version of a Meritocracy, which is new speak for only White "Christian" Males need apply.
If we were to go with a strict Meritocracy, we would need to totally ignore race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, culture, citizenship, marital status, and focus solely on the abilities of the applicants. The only thing we would need to consider is are they good enough to fulfill the responsibilities of the position?
If that was our actual criteria, so far the current Government's cabinet picks and new hires all miserably fail to qualify for their positions, being at best lacking in experience, and at worst completely incompetent or criminal.
So I'm okay with a Meritocracy, if it's a strict Meritocracy, and you lose your job when you screw up.
However, we still need to help those who are victims of systemic racism.
