Solving The Paradox Of Tolerance
I've been seeing this a lot lately on the internet and it even came up at Paganicon.
Should we tolerate intolerance?
The answer is relatively simple, we should NOT! Communities must have boundaries. Those boundries are a social contract between those in the community, and help to create a sense of safety for community members.
Tolerance should be viewed as part of a communty's social contract, not as a stand alone virtue.
The former is external between community members and the latter is internal to the individual.
Simply put, anyone who CHOOSES not to abide by the social contract is no longer covered by it.
In other words, if YOU refuse to allow someone to show up at the table, then YOU lose your own place at that table.
